Thomas Kinkade, the Anti-Hirst

Both Thomas Kinkade and Damien Hirst are controversial figures whose artistic practices cast an oblique light on the production of value. Hirst’s work provokes spirited critique and adulation, as does Kinkade’s mechanically reproduced opus. Rather than operating as kitsch or a new model for art making, Kinkade’s overt profit motive, self-celebration, and Christianity refract political, economic and aesthetic constructions that undergird contemporary markets. Like Hirst, Kinkade’s materials and pricing theatrics place his work in the realm of spectacle. A bad boy of the aesthetic economy, Kinkade’s work, dismissed by the established art world, nevertheless has much to say about it, and about us.

Alexander Auditorium

Presentation by Professor Susan Falls, an anthropology professor in the SCAD Liberal Arts department.

Charles Clary says, “I hope the new year is treating you well. 2011 was a great year for me, and 2012 is shaping up to be even better. I thought I’d let you know of all the exciting exhibitions, publications, and news that are about to occur.”

I have 3 group paper art exhibitions that are going to be taking place in the next two months. Information for each show is as follows:

CARVED COMPLEXITIES – PAPER CUT SHOW

February 4, 2012 – February 27, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 4 2012, 7-11 PM

Location: Gallery Nucleus – Atrium

                 210 East Main Street

                 Alhambra, CA 91801

For many, crafting with paper and scissors might be considered one of the earliest introductions to art. While some have ventured off to experiement other methods of artistry, a loyal few have indulged in their fascination with paper cut to produce works simple in context yet startlingly enigmatic in precision. Gallery Nucleus invites you to revisit the fundamental medium of paper and blade with “Carved Complexities,” an exhibition featuring a select group of renowned paper cut artists who elevate the form of paper cutting to new heights of detail and imagination.

Participating artists include: Ted Prize Winner Beatrice Coron, Hunter Stabler, Julene Harrison, Kevin Jay Stanton, Lucrezia Bieler, Matt Shlian, and Mr. Yen. I am honored to show with this ridiculously talented group of paper artists.

For more information please go to: http://www.gallerynucleus.com/gallery/exhibition/334

Next:

On and Off the Wall: Paper as Art

Since its development in 2nd century China, paper has primarily been used in artistic practices as a flat surface for the application of other materials. With the advent of origami in 17th century Japan, artists have embraced paper as a primary resource, and have continued to explore its dimensional and organic possibilities. Included in this exhibition are works by Jin Lee, Anonda Bell and others.

I will also be showing with the wonderful Lauren Clay whose work can be found here: http://www.doublefluff.com/

Saturday, February 25 – Friday, March 30
Opening Reception: Friday, February 24, 5 – 7:30 pm
Free
Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery

Click here for Gallery hours and information.

Finally:

Venue: View, the arts center in Old Forge, NY

Exhibit: Paper Anniversary

Gallery: Community Gallery

Dates: March 10, 2012 – May 6, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 10, 2012, 2-5 pm

Additional activities: TBA

I will send an updated participant list once it becomes finalized but there are some pretty heavy hitters in this exhibition.

I will also be participating in the 2012 G40 Summit Exhibit that will be hosted in Richmond this year. This is a great event celebrating Installation art and Street art. It was a huge success last year and is looking to be as good this year. Tentative dates are set for April but I will have more info once it is finalized. Big thanks to Microwave projects for inviting me to participate again.

Arkansas University has invited me to give an artist lecture on my work as well as a small exhibition and demo of my process on Thursday April 26th. This will be an exciting experience to share my work and process to such a successful program. I’d like to thank The University of Arkansas and Robert Lemming for arranging this visit.

I will be featured in the upcoming publication “Paper Work” published by Sandu Publishing. This has been in the works for some time and will be set to release soon. I will notify you once this publication becomes available. Schleunungdruck, a german publishing company, also put out a great paper art calendar that featured two of my works.

The Image Calendar 2012 is ready!
The traditional picture calendar for almost all customers and friends of Schleunungdruck was made just ready. It is the fourthcalendar with images of international paper and very well-knownartists that show what you can do everything from the raw material paper. Again a very diverse mix of artists from Germany, Scotland and the USA. And because the selection and preparation takes a long time, even the preparations for the 2013 calendar!

Dezember 2011

Finally, I’ve been invited to participate in the ART PAPERS ART AUCTION for 2012 and am extremely honored to do so. ART PAPERS is a wonderful publication and is a not-for-profit publication providing diverse perspectives on contemporary art for thirty-five years.

At the National Gallery’s CHARISMA symposium on Leonardo’s technical practices and influence (January 13-14), many fascinating and highly informative demonstrations were made of non-invasive imaging techniques. A ground-breaking paper by Ana González Mozo revealed how the Prado’s copy of the Mona Lisa had faithfully tracked Leonardo’s own revisions on the original work. Imagine – a copy not so much of the finished masterpiece but of its very genesis. The proceedings, happily, are to be published.
Skowhegan, in both its physical and programmatic design, provides opportunities for intense work and creative direction. Because the program focuses on process and experimentation, Participants are encouraged to come prepared to work without a preconceived agenda or schedule. The program requires Participants to commit to being in residence for the full nine-week session from mid-June to mid-August, and absences from the program to fulfill other professional commitments are not permitted. All Participants, Faculty, and staff live and work on campus and are provided with studio space and technical support for their work. The artistic dialogue continues around the clock.

Skowhegan’s Board of Governors, all working artists, invites a new faculty of Resident and Visiting Artists to campus each year to guarantee a diversity of perspectives. These artists are highly accomplished and represent a cross-section of the contemporary art world. The structure of Skowhegan’s program is provided by regular one-on-one critiques given to each Participant by the Faculty, and through the series of lectures given by the Faculty over the summer. Participants also gather weekly for open critiques led by a Dean. Skowhegan also offers the rare opportunity to learn and practice buon fresco technique. In the context of Skowhegan’s program, fresco offers an opportunity to explore a rich and ancient process that can inspire and accommodate a broad range of contemporary ideas. All Participants and Faculty members are encouraged to experiment in this medium with the guidance of an experienced instructor. Performances, reading groups, discussions, and community and off-campus projects initiated by Participants comprise an important part of the Skowhegan experience and are encouraged and supported.
